Mossy Fjord

Field notes from slow walks along northern shores

Morning fog over the inlet

The fog sat on the water until almost ten. Gulls worked the shallows and the birches on the far side came and went like a slow photograph developing.

Lichen, up close

A hand lens changes a granite boulder into a city. Map lichen, crustose rosettes and a single bright patch of moss holding last night's rain.

The long way round the lake

Eleven kilometres, two creek crossings and a thermos of strong tea. The path is soft with needles and almost nobody uses it after the berry season.
